Biography

Jane Austen (1775–1817) was an English novelist celebrated for her wit, memorable characters, and insightful portrayals of marriage, money, and social class. Born on December 16, 1775, in Steventon, Hampshire, she was the daughter of a Church of England clergyman. She grew up in a family that encouraged reading, writing, and amateur theatre, and began creating stories in her youth. Jane Austen’s House


Austen completed six novels, including Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma. Her novels appeared anonymously during her lifetime. After settling in Chawton in 1809, she revised earlier manuscripts and wrote new works, producing the books that established her lasting reputation.
