Description
Livia Cable, a middle-aged woman living on a Tennessee farm, receives an unexpected call from Sigurd, a former lover from her youth. Decades earlier, as Livia Bohusz, she was a promising music conservatory student estranged from her family, uncertain except for her passion for music and her promise as an extraordinary pianist. Sigurd's request to see her again stirs up memories of childhood loss, abandonment, and a passionate attachment to a man who broke her belief in love and altered the course of her life. The novel shifts between past and present, exploring Livia's decision to meet or reject the reunion, confronting traumas framed as musical dances. With deep affection, Pulitzer Prize winner Barbara Kingsolver's novel reflects on class barriers, the risks of ambition, and the timeless, life-changing power of art.
