In 1907, a diverse group of competitors embarked on the Peking-to-Paris Motor Challenge, a perilous 8,000-mile race across Asia and Europe. Among them were an Italian prince and his chauffeur, a French racing driver, a con man, and several rival journalists. They traversed treacherous terrains, including steep inclines, narrow mountain passages, and the arid Gobi Desert, enduring torrential rain and choking dust. With barely any roads and scarce fuel, their journey captivated a global audience, with millions following their progress through telegraphed reports. This race occurred at a pivotal moment in history, as imperial regimes in China and Russia were crumbling, paving the way for the rise of communist ones. The electric telegraph was rapidly transforming modern communication, affecting news media, commerce, and politics. Kassia St. Clair's narrative intertwines the racers' adventures with broader geopolitical and technological shifts, illustrating how the Peking-to-Paris Motor Challenge became a critical tipping point that accelerated the twentieth century.
