Book Details
In the remote Cornish parish of Endelstow, Elfride Swancourt, the 19-year-old daughter of the local rector, becomes entangled with two men of contrasting backgrounds. Stephen Smith, a young architect from a modest family, arrives to oversee the restoration of the parish church and forms a romantic connection with Elfride. However, her father disapproves of Stephen's social standing, leading to their separation. Later, Henry Knight, an older, established literary man from London, enters Elfride's life, and they become engaged. Unbeknownst to Henry, Elfride had previously been romantically involved with Stephen. When this past relationship is revealed, Henry's feelings change, and Elfride faces a heart-wrenching decision. The novel explores themes of love, social class, and the complexities of human relationships in Victorian society.
